“On this record, I tried to bring the songs back to my own personal fears; I wasn’t necessarily trying to come up with songs that were going to speak for everybody. It doesn’t necessarily have to follow my life to the letter — it’s more about thinking of what your life would be like if you had just done this, or if you had just done that, and how this could’ve taken you to a darker place, or that could’ve taken you to a better place. Nevertheless, you always find yourself walking the line.”
And that’s ultimately what Collider is about for Sam Roberts — musical exploration as a vehicle for emotional introspection. Despite what the album’s opening track might tell you, this is not the last crusade he’s on — but the point is that it should feel like it.
Singer, songwriter, and Canadian icon Steven Page has made an indelible impression on our country's bustling music scene as well as its cultural landscape. A witty, endearing, and introspective stage presence, Page enjoyed two decades of success as the co-founder of The Barenaked Ladies, the popular band from Scarborough, ON, who dominated MuchMusic & MTV, sold millions of albums, received two Billboard Awards, Grammy nominations and were awarded six Junos along the way.
Steven Page's evolving artistic path now has him blazing a solo trail, where he continues to take chances and catch the public’s attention with a variety of new projects, including some of his best material yet. The fruits of this journey have borne three Stratford Shakespeare Festival scores, and two solo albums: A Singer Must Die (with The Art of Time Ensemble) and Page One his true solo debut. Page One is not only his most recent album, it is the most distilled expression of Steven Page.
Steven’s touring band, a six piece collective of multi-instrumentalists, includes Bryden, Jason and Jesse Baird (Feist), Kevin Fox and Karen Graves. The upbeat set includes selections from Steven Page’s solo albums along with plenty of Barenaked Ladies classics all sung with that distinctive and familiar voice in a performance that combines musicianship with entertainment – be prepared for an evening of fine music and fun.

Jackson-Triggs is pleased to welcome the 2012 Juno Winners - Group of the Year, Arkells to the Amphitheatre stage.
Sharing a love of the kind of raw, soulful “Springsteenesque” rock that inspires a teen to pick up a guitar and start a band, the Arkells formed in Hamilton, ON, in 2006. The ambitious and prolific five-piece quickly found its groove, and recorded debut EP “Deadlines” in 2007. From the strum of the first track, the six-song EP showcased the Arkells masterful blending of traditional blues hooks mixed with modern rock-laden riffs, and a touch of classic Motown era rhythms. Their catchy melodies and unbridled energy live garnered critical acclaim with NOW Magazine describing the Arkells as having “an awesome muscular quality that sets it apart from the output of so many of their sad-sack indie rock peers…”
Since the release of “Deadlines” the band has traveled across Canada sharing stages with Bedouin Soundclash, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Sam Roberts Band, Constantines, Alexisonfire, and City and Colour. More recent performances include a stint opening for legendary rockers Black Crowes, MTV Live and V-Fest. With live shows fueling the buzz created by the EP, the band quickly caught the ear of Dine Alone Records (home to City and Colour, Bedouin Soundclash, Attack in Black and Black Lungs) who re-released “Deadlines” digitally in March 2008.
The Arkells’ are gearing up for the release of their first full-length album titled “Jackson Square” to be released October 28, 2008 on Dine Alone. Featuring undeniably catchy tracks like Oh, The Boss Is Coming, No Champagne Socialist, and Ballad of Hugo Chavez, “Jackson Square” captures the essence of the band’s hard-hitting live show and their boundless passion for making meaty, rootsy rock that any listener can relate to.
Adam Cohen - July 21Singer-songwriter-guitarist Adam Cohen, the son of the legendary Leonard Cohen, will showcase “elegant poem songs” (MOJO) from his “candid, sensuous” (Mail on Sunday) new album “one truly fit to bear the family name” (Sunday Times) Like A Man on Saturday, July 21st with the Niagara Symphony Orchestra.
Welcome back a Jackson-Triggs favourite Kathleen Edwards! Alternative country singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards has graced our stage on two separate occasions - last season alongside Hawksley Workman and at the original ROOTSTOCK three years ago. We are thrilled to have her back!
Voyageur is less of a departure than it is a journey, and like any transforming trip, it demands that we let go of any preconceptions about the destination. These songs are the perfect travel companions to their own haunted landscape. Edwards guides us through a house full of empty rooms, revealing the sadness behind a public smile and the numbness that follows broken expectations and the casual cruelties of love, until we find ourselves softly drifting down to hell with her. And yet, this isn’t a bummer ride at all — it’s elevating. The Romantic poet William Wordsworth said that poetry is born in “emotion recollected in tranquility,” and Voyageur evokes a spectrum of overwhelming feelings within the atmosphere of a lucid dream. Edward’s characters speak to the grief, loneliness, shock, and confusion that come with endings as well as the hope and irrepressible joy that accompany new beginnings, but the stories are told with a seductively quiet strength. The album celebrates the many pleasures of survival and reinvention, suggesting that an acceptance of life’s changeability is what will allow us to face the hardest of hard times — as well as the exhilarating longing and dislocation of the unknown — head on, with grace.
We are thrilled to welcome Chantal back to the Jackson-Triggs stage following her incredible performance with the Niagara Symphony Orchestra last season that was featured on her DVD/HBO recording In This Life.

Over her career, Chantal has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to human rights causes. J
uno nominated singer-songwriter and producer Royal Wood has spent years perfecting his craft of balladry and pop music. His new album, The Waiting, appropriately begins with a song entitled "You Can't Go Back." And why would he, when with each new release Royal Wood delivers another collection of heartrending and honest tales of love, loss and life more impressive than the last. It now seems more than ever that Wood has found his voice. "This record is about the duality of life and how at times, I seemingly waited for the mirrored experience to return," says Wood. "I went through so many severe shifts personally and all of that turbulence led to serious thought and reflection. That is why these songs were born and why they are my most personal and introspective to date."
Described as “one of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer”, (TIME Magazine) and nominated three times for her country’s top music prize (The Juno Awards), multi-faceted Canadian singer/songwriter/pianist Sarah Slean seems to be hitting her stride. With her latest release, the ambitious double album “Land & Sea”, Slean has created what The Montreal Gazette calls “a masterpiece”.
Land is a big, warm, gleeful spasm of unabashed pop/rock full of Slean’s signature lyrics, big voice and powerful piano chops, produced by East Coast icon Joel Plaskett (Joel Plaskett Emergency), and mixed by Big Sugar/Grady front man Gordie Johnson and Vic Florencia (Nelly Furtado). Sea is a collection of nine cinematic, orchestral jaw-droppers, four of which were scored for 21- strings by Sarah herself. With the help of renowned producer/film composer Jonathan Goldsmith (Jane Siberry, Bruce Cockburn/Away From Her, Casino Jack) and award-winning engineer Jeff Wolpert (Loreena McKennitt) Sea is “an awe-inspiring panorama of the mature poet and musician” containing “echoes of Gustav Mahler, Leonard Cohen and Kurt Weill” (Toronto Star).
Over her 14 year career, with 9 recordings released in over 10 countries worldwide, Slean’s music has borrowed aspects of cabaret, rock, pop, and orchestral : all knit together by the startling poetry of her lyrics, virtuosic piano-playing, and that voice: “a 19th century Kate Bush” (Mersereau - CBC). In addition to headlining theatres across Canada, Sarah has also toured France, Germany, the US and Sweden and opened internationally for such artists as Ron Sexmsith, Feist, Alanis Morissette, Buck 65, Sarah Harmer, Andrew Bird, Chris Isaac, and Bryan Ferry.
